Lot Essay

The original statue of the Emperor Aurelius stood on the Campidoglio in Rome since 1538. Surviving a bomb attack in 1979 it was found to be deteriorating rapidly due to atmospheric pollution. It was restored between 1981 and 1989 and is now kept under glass in the Capitoline Museum. Twice life size and originally gilded, the statue was produced after the Emperor's death in 180 AD when he was deified.
