MARK OF JOHN SAMUEL HUNT AND JOHN MORTIMER, LONDON, 1842
Shaped circular on four openwork feet, with foliage scroll and flower pierced border, chased and engraved with further foliage scrolls centring an engraved coat-of-arms below a baron's coronet, marked underneath, the base further stamped 'MORTIMER & HUNT and numbered '956'

The arms are those of Rothschild almost certainly for Baron Lionel Nathan de Rothschild the eldest son of Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), founder of the British branch of the banking dynasty. Lionel was born in England and attended the University of Göttingen. In 1828 he started work at Rothschild's and in 1836 in Frankfurt he married Charlotte, the daughter of his uncle, the Baron Carl Mayer de Rothschild (1788-1855). After the death of his father, Lionel took control of the London business at the age of twenty-eight. In addition to his business interests, Lionel Rothschild was active in politics, holding a seat in the House of Commons from 1858-1874. Both he and his wife, a noted hostess, were renowned for their great philanthropy.
