Lot Essay

These sculptural figures of water gods are inspired by the works of Italian 17th century sculptors, such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). The sculptor Eugenio Avolio (1876-1929) produced works similarly inspired, as did Luigi Avolio in the 20th century. A pair of reclining river gods, also attributed to Luigi Avolio, were sold Christie's Rome, 6 June 2002, lot 465 and magnificent group of seven figure embelmatic of the sea were included in the same sale (lot 470). A large group of silvered bronze figures by Eugenio Avolio were sold Nagel Auktionen, Stuttgart, 26 September 2003 and a further group of five, unattributed but almost certainly by Avolio, were in the collection of King George I of the Hellenes, (Christie's, London, 24 and 25 January 2007, lot 591).
