Lot Essay

This study shows the action at 12.55 p.m. Seen from left to right are the Spanish ship San Leandro, Téméraire firing into the stern of Admiral Villeneuve's flagship Bucentaure which has just received the devastating broadsides of Victory. Victory has lost her mizzen topmast and is flying the flag of the Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson at the fore and the signal for close action at the main. She is engaging Rédoutable. Then Neptune firing her one and only broadside into the bow of Victory and finally, the Spanish ship San Justo.
