Property from the Collection of the late David MacGregor Esq. (Lots 39-58). David MacGregor was born in 1925, the son of an officer in the Scottish army. Schooled at Eton and then Cambridge, he developed a keen interest in both painting and in the nautical world, perhaps stemming from a family sailing holiday on the Norfolk Broads. After graduating from Cambridge, he started work in the Architect's Department of Fulham Borough Council, but continued to indulge his passion for maritime research in his spare time. In 1961 he decided to leave architecture and devote himself to becoming a full-time writer, plan supplier and painter. His speciality was clipper ships and he published several notable volumes including The Tea Clippers, Merchant Sailing Ships 1815-1850, British and American Clippers and The Schooner: Its Design and Development. MacGregor was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Royal Historical Society. He was also a member of the Ships Committee of the Maritime Trust and a Vice-President of the Society for Nautical Research. Following his death in 2003 most of his books and ships plans were donated to the SS Great Britain in Bristol creating the largest specialist collection of Maritime books outside London, which will form the foundations of the David MacGregor Library.
