Gustave Jean Jacquet (Paris 1846-1909)
GUSTAVE JEAN JACQUET (PARIS 1846-1909) Lots 299-302 A pupil of Bouguereau, Gustave Jacquet specialised in portraiture and genre scenes normally depicting his sitters in historical dress, especially from the 16th and 17th centuries. This collection of sketches was found in his studio at his death in 1909 and many of the items were then stamped with the artist's signature. They demonstrate Jacquet's skill as a draughtsman and show the large number of studies he worked on before he committed a picture to canvas. As well as these studies, the group also contains some sketches from life drawn during the siege of Paris in 1870 at the time of the Franco-Prussian war when the young Jacquet must have joined his countrymen to defend his native city against the threat of invasion (lot 300).
