The three divisions centred with later laurel wreath above a drawer on tapering reeded legs on castors, bearing two ink inscriptions 'James May Cabinet Maker Beverley August 14 1838'

This Canterbury derives from a design by John C. Loudon published in Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833.

J May is listed in Geoffrey Beard and Christopher Gilbert (eds.), Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, p. 589 as working as a cabinet maker in Beverley, Yorkshire from 1804.
