Lot Essay

According to an inscription on the old mount, the figures were added by Rowlandson. It is known that Rowlandson worked alongside Pugin on the plates contributed to The Microcosm of London: or London in Miniature, London, 1808, with Pugin providing the detailed architectural drawing and Rowlandson adding the figures to give an impression of 'the general air and peculiar carriage, habit &c. of the characters as are likely to make up the majority in particular places.' The evidence of this work suggests that Rowlandson also worked on similar commissions with John Nash.
