Lot Essay

White Phoenix exemplifies Gao Qifeng's mastery skills of modern Chinese paintings. A prominent figure of the Lingnan School, Gao used mogu or boneless painting method to depict the snowy white phoenix perching on a jagged rock, all rested on a blank background without paint. As the colour deposits along the painting edges during the drying process, an outline with three-dimensional effect is created, resulting in a striking image of the white phoenix and rock.
