According to Mr. Katsuizumi's personal recollections of 15th August, 1962, the current painting was one of his first acquisitions. Having visited Qi Baishi's studio with Mr. Tanso Ito in 1925, it was with Mr. Ito's help that Mr. Katsuizumi was able to obtain two small works by Qi on Christmas Eve of the same year. Mr. Katsuizumi recounts that 'one of the two paintings was of a winter scene with a lone leafless tree visited by a number of black birds, probably crows, just after the sun set. I liked it very much.' Qi Baishi created several paintings depicting barren, wintry landscapes in 1922. It was a year of great loss for the artist, as his eldest grandson died that year at 18 years old, having just graduated from Beijing Law School with honors.
