The present work is being sold from the estate of the journalist and art historian, John Russell (1919-2008). Russell began regularly contributing articles to The Sunday Times in 1945, on the recommendation of Ian Fleming, and worked there until 1974. From there he moved to The New York Times, becoming the newspaper's chief art critic in 1982. He supported several artists in the early years of their careers, including David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin, R.B. Kitaj and Anthony Caro.
Russell is the author of books on artists including Georges Seurat (1965), Max Ernst (1967), Henry Moore (1968), Ben Nicholson (1969) and Francis Bacon (1971). In 1965 he and Bryan Robertson wrote the acclaimed Private View, illustrated with photographs by Lord Snowdon. It outlined the significance and increasing popularity of contemporary British artists. The dust jacket reads, 'Private View is a new kind of book about a new situation. It is the first book ever to tell how London became, with Paris and New York, one of the world's three capitals of art, how the creative dynamism of British art came to dominate the international scene'.
