Lot Essay

Louis Delanois, maître in 1761.

These superb fauteils are entirely carved to their sinuous backs and rails with ribbon-twist and are closely related to a chair in a New York private collection which is illustrated by S. Eriksen, Louis Delanois, Paris, 1968, fig. XXXIb. In 1768, Delanois supplied the tapissier David with six fauteuils carved 'à la romaine et à ruban par tout', which corresponds to the carving of the present fauteuils.
