In the form of a blue lotus, deep blue in color, with black details for the overlapping petals and striations along the stem, the bowl flaring at the rim, the foot splayed

Lot Essay

As Friedman informs (Gifts of the Nile, no. 114, p. 224), "the meaning of the lotus, the ubiquitous symbol of new life, was enhanced through depicting it in faience, a material in which notions of light and rebirth were intrinsic."
