Lot Essay

The present example is most similar to the Artemis Laphria type, an Antonine period adaptation of a 2nd century B.C. Hellenistic original. The placement of the left hand on the hip, the short chiton falling above the knee and the bloused drapery are especially reminiscent. However, in the present example, the right arm is raised above the shoulder, an uncharacteristic feature of the type. See for example no. 197 in Kahil, "Artemis" in LIMC.
