A BYZANTINE BRONZE OIL LAMP AND STAND
CIRCA 5TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.
The lamp with a wide, flanged edge, bird heads on either side of the long nozzle, a cross surmounting the ring handle surrounded by a spade-shaped volute, terminating in swan heads, the fill-hole with a hinged flat lid centered by a finial in the form of a ciborium, an eagle at the top, with an upturned nozzle, on a ring base with a square socket to accommodate the tapering pricket; the stand with a shallow drip pan on top of a slender knobbed baluster with moldings, supported by three legs with lion-paw feet
