A FRENCH HARDSTONE AND ENAMELED CANE
THE ROBERT PEARSON CANE COLLECTION (LOTS 431-446, 480-495, 563-579) While the collecting of antique canes is a worldwide activity, one rarely sees such an abundance of the finest examples come to the salerooms all at once. This extraordinary collection, formed by Robert Pearson of Dallas, represents the collector's passion for items of great quality and decorative beauty. Working with the leading dealers in Europe and America over the past two decades, Mr. Pearson has focused on canes that exemplify the highest degree of craftsmanship and artistry in this fascinating collecting field. Whether made of porcelain, precious metals, ivory or semi-precious stones, each cane in the Pearson Collection makes its own dramatic statement. This is hardly surprising since many of the canes were previously in renowned private collections, such as that of the legendary European cane collector Catherine Dike, and represent the striking diversity of cane styles and materials. In addition to many outstanding canes made of ivory, the Pearson Collection also includes a virtual rainbow of hardstone and semiprecious canes which form a testament to the astounding variety and creativity of this genre. With the publication of a book on his collection in 2009, this sale now marks the end of a collecting journey that, throughout, emphasized quality over quantity. The journey brought Mr. Pearson and his wife, Lee, great joy and pleasure along with many new friends.
