Lot Essay
A group of chiffoniers of similar form, construction and timbers includes an example in the collection of the Dukes of Norfolk at Arundel Park, Sussex (see C. Musgrave, 'Arundel Park, Sussex', The Connoisseur, June 1963, p. 80, pl. 14). Another, with painted ovals, formerly in the collection of George D. Widener, was sold Christie's, New York, 12-13 October 1995, lot 191; a further example, whose ovals are lined with pleated silk, was with the London dealer Jeremy Ltd. and is now in a distinguished private collection.
The group has been associated with the London cabinet-maker George Simson based on a labeled example which utilizes similar timbers and stylized line inlay (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked Furniture 1700-1840, 1996, p. 422, fig. 840). Simson is recorded working at 19 St. Paul's Churchyard from 1780-1839.
