Lot Essay

Alex Frommery was active as an enameller at Berlin in the early 18th century. His work is best known for the unusual use of raised gilding and translucent enamels of figures and reliefs. He also worked with C.F. Herold from approximately 1740-1750. See H. Williams, Enamels of the World 1700-2000, The Khalili Colletions, London, 2009, no. 145 for a similarly decorated sugar-box.
