Lot Essay

The present model is based on the San Ildefonso Group, a marble Roman sculpture dating to the 1st century AD that was formerly in the Ildefonso palace in Spain. In 1839, the group was moved to the Museo del Prado in Madrid where it remains to this day. Other copies can be found in the gardens of Versailles and the in collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. For a Meissen example in the Zwinger, see Porcelain Collection Dresden, Guide to the Permanent Collection, Dresden, 1998, p. 241.
