Chang Wan-chuan emphasizes the expressiveness of colour in Still Life (Lot 1166). Bolding applying shades of red and green, he balances each object with complementary colours. The table is covered by yellow mostly, mingled with pink or olive in detailed parts, creating a strong and yet compatible scene. Fish (Lot 1166) painted from an elevated perspective shows one fish situated horizontally in an almost perfectly round plate while the fish above runs parallel to some scallions, forming a diagonal line from the upper left to lower right along the fish's head and tail. Much like the still life, Chang Wan-chuan carefully composes the painting to extract the essence of existence through simplified geometrical forms.
