Although considered by Bazin (op. cit.) to be a study for Le carabinier, today in the Louvre, it seems that the same model in this painting was also used in another version of the same subject (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen) and, possibly, in Géricault's famous Cuirassier blessé quittant le feu (Louvre). There is also a drawing of this painting in reverse (private collection, fig. 1).
