Lot Essay

Les dégustateurs d'eau-de-vie was a popular subject for the artist. Between 1869 and 1873, Lhermitte executed three drawings and two paintings of scenes outside breweries. This particular drawing served as a study for the etching l'Alambic (see no. 22 in Eaux-Fortes de Léon Lhermitte by F. Henriet, Paris, 1905).
