Lot Essay

The vendor of this lot worked as a camera assistant on the shoot of Our World, the first live international satellite transmission which brought together nineteen countries across five continents and was watched by an estimated 400 million viewers. The ambitious event was the idea of the BBC, who requested the Beatles star in the UK contribution to the event. The BBC commissioned the band to write a new song to be previewed on Our World; the brief for the track was that it would be a song that could transcend nationalities. John Lennon composed All You Need Is Love which the band performed with their handpicked 'backing group', made up of some of their friends at the time including Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithful, Eric Clapton and Keith Moon. The title page of the script states Live Transmission: "Our World" 20.00-22.00 ("The Beatles" approx. 21.35.30). Immediately after the studio went off air the vendor saw an opportunity, in the relaxed celebratory atmosphere, to ask the Beatles for their signatures. He used the rehearsal script for the group to sign. All You Need Is Love was later released and was number one in the UK and USA.
