CHURCHILL, Winston S. (1874-1965). Signatures ('Winston S. Churchill') on six pictures extracted from an illustrated journal [late 1900], relating 'Mr. Winston Churchill's Daring Escape' [from Boer captivity], comprising a portrait photograph, a photograph of the prison in the States Model School, Pretoria, from which he escaped, and engraved drawings (based on sketches by Churchill) entitled 'Inside an armoured train', 'Mr. Winston Churchill scaling the wall of the prison at Pretoria' (also signed by Churchill's fellow prison Sir Aylmer Haldane), 'Mr. Churchill boarding a goods train' and the escaped Churchill 'Waiting for night', on recto and verso of a leaf, oblong folio, extracted from an album, with three unrelated photographs. Provenance: family album of General Walter Congreve (catalogue note) -- Swann, 3 June 1997, lot 47.
Walter Congreve and his son, William (depicted at the age of 10 in one of the accompanying photographs on the album leaf) are one of only three father and son pairs to have won the Victoria Cross: Walter Congreve's was awarded for his actions at the Battle of Colenso on 15 December 1899 -- two days after Churchill's prison escape.
