Churchill') to Alfred Leaf, Board of Trade, 28 April and 20 August 1908, thanking the recipient for his support during Churchill's losing by-election campaign in his Manchester North-West constituency, where the Unionist Free Trade party 'stood like men for their principles', and expressing his belief that their efforts will be rewarded at the general election, and on 20 August thanking him for congratulations [on his engagement], together 4 pages, 8vo, envelopes.
Churchill's elevation to the cabinet by Asquith had, under the conventions of the time, obliged him to seek re-election for his parliamentary seat of Manchester North-West: he was unsuccessful, but was immediately offered the safe seat of Dundee, to which he was elected the following month. (2)
