THE 'FIENDISH CRIMINALS' OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION. Churchill writes indignantly in response to implied reproaches from his cousin on her return from her notorious tour of Soviet Russia, where she had sculpted (and reputedly had affairs with) a number of the leading revolutionaries, including Lenin, Trotsky, Dzerzhinsky and Kamenev: she had not sought his advice before departing, nor after her return, and in any case he could hardly bring himself to meet her 'fresh from the society of those whom I regard as fiendish criminals'; nevertheless he reaffirms his affection for her, adding generously 'no one has felt more sympathy or admiration for yr gifts & exertion than I have'. She may therefore continue to count upon his friendship in the future, but simply not while she continues under the influence of 'those other friends'; he concludes with the hope that after a due interval they can both forget about the whole episode.
