THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ENTENTE CORDIALE. An emotional letter professing his devotion to the cause of Anglo-French unity, after an even more emotional return to Paris to mark the first Armistice Day since the Liberation. Churchill thanks Duff Cooper for suggesting the visit, which was both successful and enjoyable -- 'Much was achieved in these two days in Paris' -- rejoicing in the 'unrestrained welcome on all sides' which demonstrated that the trials of the war have served only to strenthen the historic ties of the Entente Cordiale in the 'minds and hearts of the French people'.

Churchill had flown to Paris on 10 November to take part in the Armistice Day wreath-laying ceremony, and for talks with De Gaulle. The Paris crowds, reported Alanbrooke, 'went quite mad over him', with chants of 'Chur-Chill! Chur-Chill!'. On the 12th he was made an honorary citizen of Paris, and gave an extempore speech in his idiosyncratic French. 'Don't know what it conveyed to the natives', Cadogan noted in his diaries, 'but it was very forceful, and tearful, with a lot of table thumping' (Gilbert, VII, p.1061).
