HALDANE, Sir Aylmer (1862-1950). Autograph letter signed to Henry Holland, 1st Viscount Knutsford, London, 22 April 1931, 20 pages, 8vo, bifolia; with two letters by Knutsford and related notes and correspondence. Provenance: Zeitlin & Ver Brugge, Los Angeles, 1978 -- Robert P. Hastings -- Christie's, 6 June 1997, lot 132.
A savage attack by his commanding officer on Churchill's behaviour in escaping alone from the Boer prisoner of war camp, and in doing so sabotaging a proposed group escape. Haldane is unequivocal as to Churchill's bad behaviour: he had been a late-comer to the escape plan and 'perfectly understood that he and I were to go in company and that the 3rd man was to follow'; Haldane describes their repeated attempts to escape together, foiled by bad conditions, and the disbelief of himself and his companion when Churchill finally escaped alone, concluding that Churchill's published account 'maintains what I honestly think is a fiction'.
