JIAQING IRON-RED SIX-CHARACTER SEALMARKS AND OF THE PERIOD (1796-1820)
Each of the ovoid bodies decorated with a large lotus blooms surrounded by beribboned anbaxiang, the Eight Daoist emblems amidst wispy cloud scrolls and smaller lotus blooms, all against a yellow-ground, the shoulders flanked by elephant-head handles, the short neck with band of overlapping ruyi-heads, beneath blue-enamelled classic scrolls around the mouth rim, the domed cover similarly enamelled with lotus blooms, surmounted by a lotus-bud finial, the interior and base with turquoise enamel

Lot Essay

The inventory labels on the bases of these vases indicate that the vases belonged to General Sir Walter Fane (1828-1885) who was a distinguished career army officer. As the commanding captain, Fane was the commander of the XIXth Bengal Cavalry at the seige of the Summer Palace in 1860.
