A FINELY CARVED SOAPSTONE SEATED FIGURE OF GUANYIN
MING DYNASTY, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
The figure is modelled seated on a separately carved ornamental rockwork base, with one knee raised supporting the corresponding hand, holding a string of prayer beads, dressed in a voluminous robe, the garment delicately incised with lotus flowers against a waves-ground, the facial features gently depicted with eyes down cast, providing a serene expression, under upswept hair tied into a topknot neatly placed under the cowl
