Lot Essay

A box with similar carved design in the Idemitsu Collection is illustrated in Ancient Chinese Arts in the Idemitsu Collection, Tokyo, 1989, no. 381. Compare also a very similar box illustrated in Carved Lacquer, The Tokugawa Art Museum, Japan, 1984, no. 22 and another example with a black lacquer rather than cinnabar lacquer surface layer published by Iwao Ikeda, Lacquer Tea Ware, Incense Boxes, Japan, 1994 no. 96.
