Lot Essay

Dishes of this design have been sold at auction, such as the pair sold at Sotheby's New York, 22 March 2001, lot 105. Larger versions include one in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, illustrated by He Li, Chinese Ceramics, 1996, pl. 591; and another pair from the Falk Collection, sold at Christie's New York, 16 October 2001, lot 156.

The decoration on these dishes is based on Ming Chenghua prototypes. Compare with a dish with the double-vajra on the interior, illustrated by J. Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, pl. 6:10; and the cups with rows of Sanskrit characters, included in the exhibition, A Legacy of Chenghua, The Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1993, illustrated in the Catalogue, nos. C62-C64.
