KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN DOUBLE-CIRCLES AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)
The rounded sides rising to a flaring rim, the exterior drawn in underglaze-blue outline to represent a pair of striding dragons in pursuit of 'flaming pearls' amidst ruyi clouds, and detailed with overglaze green enamel, reserved on a blue background, all above a band of overlapping petals, the interior similarly decorated with a central dragon medallion within a single line border, the footring encircled with lotus lappets above double borders

This bowl with distinct 'five-clawed' dragons is an uncommon example. A similar bowl from the collection of Sir David Home Rt. was sold at Sotheby's London, 8 December 1992, lot 315. Another with the same detail is illustrated by Lu Minghua, Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Hong Kong, p. 300, no. 194.

This design on bowls and dishes is often found with black enamel covering the fifth claw of the dragon as with the proceding lot. Compare the present lot with a bowl of this identical pattern also with a black-enamelled fifth claw, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 October 2002, lot 739.
