CASE: bell top case with replaced pineapple finials, glazed roundels above sound frets to the sides, foliate cast spandrels to front door with brass lining, on squab feet DIAL: 7 in. wide brass dial with foliate spandrels to silvered chapter ring, matted centre with date aperture and mock pendulum aperture, strike/not strike above XII, silvered regulation disc to the arch signed 'James Cowan/EDINBURGH', blued steel hands MOVEMENT: five ringed pillars, twin line fusees with verge escapement, rack strike on bell, the back plate engraved with birds and foliage; case key

James Cowan was apprenticed in 1744 to Archibald Straiton of Edinburgh and recorded working in the city from 1753 until his death in 1781.
