CASE: rising hood with gilt-capped spiral twist columns, trunk door with ebonised moulded frame and lenticle, bird and flower marquetry, conforming floral marquetry to the plinth, the sides of the trunk and plinth with inlaid panels, on later bun feet DIAL: 10 in. square brass dial (formerly latched) with winged cherub spandrels to silvered chapter ring signed 'Edw Stanton London', gilt matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring and date aperture, cut and blued steel hands MOVEMENT: the movement with four ringed and latched pillars (formerly five), anchor escapement and outside countwheel strike on bell, formerly with bolt-and-shutter maintaining power; formerly with bracket to backboard, case possibly associated to dial and movement; pendulum, two replaced brass weights, door key, crank key

Lot Essay

Edward Stanton (circa 1642 -- post 1715) was apprenticed in December 1655 to Francis Bowen and later Nathaniel Allen. He was Free of the Clockmakers' Company in January 1662/63 and soon after established his own business, taking on fourteen apprentices between 1664 and 1705. He was made Assistant to the Clockmakers' Company in 1682, Warden in 1693 and its Master in 1697. In 1699 he oversaw John Ebsworth's will. Stanton regularly attended the Clockmakers' Company until 1715.
A floral marquetry longcase clock by Stanton, with 19th Century movement, was sold these rooms, 11 December 2002, lot 50 (£27,485).
