Lot Essay
The pier commode of bowed outline with canted angles relates to a design for a 'French commode Table' issued in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, while the veil drapery on the angles recalls Chippendale's pattern for a 'Lady's Dressing Table' in the Director, 3rd ed., 1762 (pl.CXVIII). Similar drapery featured on a commode sold anonymously Sotheby's, New York, 24-25 April, 1992, lot 457, and another Christie's, London, 10 July, 2003, lot 14.
