Lot Essay
These robust dining-room chairs recall the furniture supplied by Gillow & Co. in 1824 to Thomas John Wynn, 2nd Baron Newborough for Glynliffon, Caernarvonshire, Wales. Their general form is in common with the dining-chairs at both Glynliffon and those supplied for William, 2nd Baron Bolton at Hackwod, Hampshire, also by Gillows, while a pair of solid rosewood bergeres, en suite with sofas, were also supplied by Gillows at Glynliffon.
The stamp of H.Lee has been recorded on several related sets of chairs all of which owe a debt to the designs of Gillows, including a set of six sold anonymously Christie's, London, 27 November, 2007, lot 189. Though the stamp has not yet been positively identified with a maker, it is possibly Henry Lee, chair and sofa maker of Oxford Market and Ogle Mews, London (active circa 1827) (see G.Beard, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660 - 1840, 1986, p.534).
