Tulipwood and amaranth crossbanded overall, the shaped top centred by a fan and with a chequer-strung edge above a conforming frieze centred by a shell-inlaid tablet on square tapering legs, branded twice 'MONTAGUE J GUEST' and with partial paper label, the feet tipped

Lot Essay

John Wisdom, cabinet-maker and upholder of 21 Jervis Street, Dublin supplied a similar table to Thomas Cobbe for Newbridge in 1790. The Newbridge accounts record a payment for 'A table of satinwood from J.Wisdom £5.13.9'. The table, closely related to the present example, is illustrated in The Knight of Glin and J.Peill, Irish Furniture, London, 2007, p.167, pl.228.

Montague Guest (1839-1909), third son of Sir John Josiah Guest, 1st Baronet, was Liberal Member of Parliament for Youghall from 1869-74, and for Wareham from 1880-85.
