Lot Essay

The inscriptions on the sides read Qianlong Jiawu (cyclical year of Jiawu Qianlong : 1774) and Zhong chun yu ti (imperial poem written in the mid-spring)
Both faces are inscribed with a poem which can be translated as
'The shadows of the flowers fill the courtyard as the moon turns yellow Anxiously awaiting the return of the swallows,
I leave my window open and brave the chill'
