Lot Essay

The idealized manner of depicting the male form in the Baphuon period resulted in some of the most beautiful and sensuous sculptures of the Angkor period. The elongated body with its very long legs and the large curve at the front of the sampot is characteristic of the sculpture from this period. Movement is suggested by both legs being slightly bent and the stone lightly polished. Compare the presented figure with an example published by M. Brand and Ch. Phoeurn, in the 'The Age of Angkor: Treasures from the National Museum of Cambodia', Australia, 1992, p. 74.
