Lot Essay

The back of this painting reveals the name of the central deity depicted, namely Yamantaka. Surrounded by eight other wrathful deities they are placed within the square mandala protected by four guardians and encompassed by the eight cremation grounds. The four corners depict scrolling tendrils containing most probably four different forms of Yamari, all standing on the bull, and various lamas belonging to the Sa.skya.pa order. The lower border sees the officiant monk at the left seated in front of the offering table to be followed by ten different forms of Vighnantaka.
The meticulous drawing of the figures and the scrolling tendrils makes this painting a wonderful testimony of the painting skills of the Tibetan artist during the 14th century.
