Mildred Anne Butler, R.W.S. (1858-1941)
MILDRED ANNE BUTLER, R.W.S. (1858-1941) (Lots 119-121,123) Butler lived at Kilmurry House, Thomastown, County Cork, where the following four watercolours were executed. During her career she travelled extensively, studying alongside contemporaries such as Walter Osborne, Sir John Lavery, and members of the Newlyn School, which she joined in 1895. Through these influences she developed a style similar to that of the Impressionists, characterised by broad washes and a strong use of colour. Exhibiting regularly for forty years at the Royal Academy and the Old Water-Colour Society, and at other institutions in both England and Ireland, very little work was sold after her death and it remained with her family at Kilmurry until they were sold from the collection of Mrs Doreen Archer-Houblon, a cousin of the artist (see lots 119-120).
