Cartier's use of Chinese and Japanese motifs and designs were synonymous with the aesthetic tastes of the 1920's, with the use of jade forming part of this. Cartier incorporated actual Chinese or Japanese elements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries into boxes and vanity cases, and combined them with enamel to form one of Cartier's characteristic colour combinations.
