Lot Essay

Landscape with buildings is a recurring theme in Francis Newton Souza's paintings from the 1950s and 60s. The artist very skillfully breathes a different kind of life, ambience into each of these paintings. Souza has created a joyful mysterious energy in the midst of these chaotic buildings; they huddle together, leaning on one another as if drawing strength from the other after a tempest. There is drama and movement created with sharp, angular lines that scream out and draw the viewer instantly into the painting. In the midst of this chaos, as one zooms into the details, one notices the subtle, delicate colours that blend and bleed so softly from one window to the other like lichen clinging on to the bark of a tree. The artist has very masterfully created a sense of eerie nostalgia of a stormy landscape from a distant past.
