A PAIR OF VICTORIAN STAINED GLASS WINDOWS

All Saints Church, Finchley Rd was completed and consecrated in 1846. The Eyre family were the main patrons and supporters of the church for most of its existence. The church was originally built with two side galleries that in 1892 were removed as part of a re-design programme entrusted to the architect D. Newman. It was during these works that "coloured windows were placed in transepts and aisles". The collection includes the set of New Testament saints originally installed in the south aisle. , The pair of panels in lot 497 are believed to be by the artist William Aikman working for James Powell and Sons. Aikman joined the company in 1892. Lots 498 and 502 are by Clayton and Bell who are considered to be amongst the most prestigious glass stainers and painters of the day. The connection between the Eyre Estate and Clayton and Bell is not coincidental as Mr J. R. Clayton (1827-1913) leased a very large villa from the Eyre Estate during the 1880s. The firm Clayton and Bell was originally founded in 1855 and continued making stained glass until 1993. , The London Diocese's records show All Saints Church demolition schedule date to commence on 20th December 1977. The church was duly demolished during 1978 and some of the architectural artefacts salvaged.
