DANIELL, William and Richard AYTON (1786-1823). A Voyage Round Great Britain, Undertaken in the Summer of the Year 1813, and Commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: T. Davison for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown and William Daniell, 1814[-1825].
8 volumes in 4, 4o (357 x 254 mm). 308 hand-colored aquating plates, within grey wash border, by and after William Daniell. (Light spotting and soiling, mostly insignifigant, some light offsetting; lacking engraved dedication in Volume 1; Plates 50, 51, 54, and 56 bound in Volume 3 rather than Volume 2 as called for in Tooley.) Modern crimson morocco gilt, edges gilt (some light scuffing and a few minor scratches).
FIRST EDITION OF "THE MOST IMPORTANT COLOUR PLATE BOOK ON BRITISH TOPOGRAPHY" (Tooley). The Voyage was originally planned by Daniell, who asked Ayton to contribute the descriptions. The partnership lasted only for the first two volumes, however, after which the two disagreed on plans for future volumes and Ayton turned to writing and adapting comedies for the English Opera House. The text for the first two volumes is noticeably longer. The work was originally issued in parts costing 10s.6d. each, and an index chart was also published at 6s., but "is not usually included, the work being complete without it" (Tooley). Abbey Scenery 16; Tooley 177. (4)
