Title within engraved border, 47 engraved portraits by THEODORE DE BRY after JORIS HOFNAEGEL within an elaborate border or flowers, fruits, animals, birds, inscects, grotesques and cartouches. (Title neatly repaired.) Green morocco gilt by W. Pratt (rebacked, spine laid down). Provenance C. Inglis (fish-shaped bookplate, and 2 addtional woodcuts and one portrait mounted on pastedowns); John L. Dudley Jr. (bookplate); Sefik E. Atabey (bookplate, his sale Sotheby's London, 28 May 2002, lot 130).
Second edition in German of Boissard's fine collection of portraits of Ottoman sultans from Osman I (1258-1326) to Murad III (1546-1595) and other historical figures such as Scanderbeg, Tammas Khuli Khan and Barbarossa. This edition does not include the text of Boissard's first edition Vitae Et Icones Sultanorum, Frankfurt, 1596. Atabey 125; Blackmer 159 (edition of 1596).
