Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1940 for this novel. One of the most influential novels of the 20th century, The Grapes of Wrath was made into a film starring Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, the Oklahoma farmer forced to leave his Dust Bowl home and search for a better life in California.
