Kemble, photographic portrait frontispiece of the bust of Mark Twain by Karl Gerhardt (small chip on margin, a little rubbed); numerous illustrations in the text. Original green pictorial cloth stamped in gold and black (recased preserving original endpapers; offset from bookplate on front free endpaper, occasional minor marginal spotting); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Mr. Halden (presentation inscription from the author on front pastedown); "H.R.S. Jr." (morocco bookplate).
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, with BAL's first state frontispiece and early issue points: "was" for "saw" on p.57; and the Illustrations list p.[13] shows "Him and another Man" plate as appearing on p.88. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY CLEMENS on the front pastedown: "To Mr. Halden with the compliments of Mark Twain October/04." BAL 3415; Grolier American 87; Johnson, pp. 43-50.
