Lot Essay
This table's elliptical frieze is embellished with pearl-strings and a fretted Grecian ribbon-scroll incorporating jasper-like tablets of sporting youths set above three legs. The central tablet is displayed, like a Roman signum-standard, above a strigil-fluted and acanthus-wrapped sphere. Its design, including the tablet of festive youths, relates to that of furniture designed by Giocondo Albertolli in the late 1780s for the Villa Reale at Monza (A. Gonzlez-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Milan, 1986, vol. II, fig. 657).
